Welcome to The Women of Ireland Project
I’m Dr. Belinda Vigors, a writer, researcher, social scientist and woman of Ireland.
The Women of Ireland Project is all about exploring:
What is it like to be a woman of Ireland, and
How have we come to be the way we are?
I spend an awful lot of time digging about in research archives, from all sorts of different scientific fields that often span vast periods of time, usually in search of some answer to the latest “why” question, relating to the experience of being a woman of Ireland I’ve become curious about.
The Women of Ireland Project is my written container for what I find on those expeditions:
connections between Ireland’s past and present
cultural curiosities
thoughts inspired by life history interviews with “ordinary” women of Ireland
Why Subscribe?
If you ask “Why” questions a lot, enjoy exploring connections between the past and present, or between seemingly unrelated ideas, or, you are curious about aspects of Ireland’s society, history and culture and how it has shaped our behaviours, ways of being and expectations, then you’ll find something here for you.
And, if you are a woman of Ireland, you may find a whole other layer of meaning.
What to expect?
Expect a monthly newsletter usually in the form of written essays that draws on all-sorts of sources. The historical, the sociological, the mythical, the political, the economic and the psychological (and whatever else falls across my research desk) will be woven together in a wide-ranging, deeply researched, collection of musings.
